DEMONSTRATION SITE NEWS

Remote monitoring trial and celery planting complete, Koo Wee Rup, VIC

Over the past month the project team have been calibrating the remote monitoring insect station with manual scouting. The aim was to better train the identification algorithm to pick up the correct pest and beneficial species. This has been a great process, but not without the challenges of some cooler and wetter spring and early summer weather at the site.

The final beds of the trial block were planted out in mid-December. We're now going to use a new set of chemical analysis handheld meters to test nutrient uptake in the trial and control blocks between now and March. These instant in-field results will also be compared with lab sap testing.

Will the crops in the variable rate technology (VRT) trial have better and more consistent uptake of nutrients compared to the non-VRT control bays? Stay tuned to find out more!

Soilborne disease management in greenhouse capsicums demonstration report - Virginia, SA

A farm demonstration trial was set up for a preliminary assessment of the effect of soil amendment, Brassica carinata pellets (BioFence), on root health and crop growth of greenhouse capsicums in the Northern Adelaide Plains by the Hort Innovation soilborne diseases project (VG15010).

This report presents findings from a grower led, on-farm demonstration trial. Grower led pilot trials provide preliminary feasibility assessments of new practices. They can lead to on-farm adaptation of practices and/or replicated research trials to rigorously test assumptions made because of initial findings.

Biological Products Database

This Biological Product Database is a tool for growers that will assist with navigating the array of ‘biological’ products currently available to their farming business. We have compiled the information in response to questions from growers about available products.

Seasonal rainfall outlook for vegetable growing regions (January - March 2020)

Irrigation and water management remains of paramount importance, as the Bureau of Meteorology is forecasting a drier and hotter than average remainder of summer. This comes after the dry year 2019 with some vegetable growing regions receiving less than half of their usual rainfall.

Internal rot of capsicums/chillies - Call for samples

AHR is leading a new Hort Innovation-funded project aimed at developing effective control measures for internal rot of capsicums.

The project team is currently calling for samples of affected capsicums and chillies in order to determine the causal agent(s) in Australia and to develop effective control measures.
